Making the Connection: Varicoceles and Infertility

Though many people believe that infertility only affects women, about one-half of cases are caused by male factor infertility. After an initial consultation, Dr. Dan Gehlbach will begin the process of trying to determine the causes of your difficulty conceiving. Usually, he checks for ovulation and tubal patency in female patients and a semen analysis for the male partner. This simple test can reveal details about issues related to male factor infertility, including a varicocele.

Diagnosing and Treating Varicoceles

Similar in nature to varicose veins, a varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum. Typically, the semen analysis will suggest the possibility of varicocele if changes in sperm parameters, such as motility or morphology, are noted. To confirm the diagnosis, Dr. Gehlbach will make a referral to a urologist, a physician with specialized training in the male reproductive system. Based on a physical exam, the urologist may or may not recommend surgery to correct the problem. It can take several months after surgery to determine if the procedure was successful.
