You may assume your infertility specialist has progressed through fellowship training and has earned board certification in fertility. The majority of reproductive endocrinologists are board certified, but approximately 20 percent are not. However, Dan Gehlbach MD has gone the extra mile in his training.

According to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (SART): “Only a physician who has successfully completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and passed the examinations can become board certified as an infertility specialist.”

To achieve board certification in reproductive medicine, Dr. Gehlbach completed:

4 years of undergraduate studies at the United States Military Academy, West Point4 years of medical school at the University of Kansas, resulting in a medical license to diagnose and treat patients in Kansas

4 years of obgyn residency training at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, resulting in passing rigorous oral and written obgyn board certification examinations

4+ years fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, resulting in passing rigorous oral and written RE board certification examinations, and ongoing training while at Midwest Reproductive Center

Specialization in reproductive endocrinology requires intense study of reproductive disorders, including clinical and laboratory research, as well as hands-on experience performing microsurgery, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) embryo transfer, sonography, and ovulation induction.

20 percent of Reproductive Endocrinologists, fertility specialists do not take and/or pass board certification tests.

Board certification is the culmination of more than a decade devoted to study, research and patient care. Medical specialty certification is an open-ended effort, as board certification requires annual commitment to assessment procedures.

When selecting a fertility specialist, ask whether he or she is board certified as a reproductive endocrinologist.

Dr. Gehlbach is board certified, and a member of SART, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI), which extends membership only to physicians board certified in reproductive medicine.
